Landscaping Materials

MJ Abbott Direct can supply a wide range of both new and reclaimed Landscaping Materials. The most popular items are described below.

RECLAIMED SLEEPERS

There are a large variety of sizes and types of reclaimed sleepers available for use in landscaping projects. The costs vary considerably depending on delivery location, quantity and grading.

Softwood Sleepers

Softwood Sleepers will generally be made from Maritime Pine or Douglas Fir and will usually be creosote treated.

Since June 2003 creosoted timber (all forms) may not be used:
  1. inside buildings
  2. in toys,
  3. in playgrounds,
  4. in parks, gardens and outdoor leisure facilities where there is a risk of frequent skin contact*,
  5. in the manufacture of garden furniture such as picnic tables,
  6. for the manufacture and use and any re-treatment of:
    • containers intended for growing purposes
    • packaging that may come into contact with raw materials, intermediate or finished products destined for human and/or animal consumption,
    • other materials which may contaminate the products mentioned above.
*The DTI has published guidance on what frequent skin contact means: "Frequent could be defined as "happening or occurring often or at short intervals".

In the context of the creosote directive, frequent skin contact could be considered as repeated (habitual) contact of the skin with, for example, creosote-treated sleepers. Habitual practices such as constant sitting, leaning against, laying on, walking on creosote-treated wood could be considered as frequent skin contact if there is no barrier between the skin and the treated wood.

Typically their dimensions will be 2.6m x 250mm x 125mm with a weight of approximately 60 kgs.

Reclaimed sleepers are graded to give an indication of their condition. This grading can be quite subjective, but a good guide to what you can expect is shown below:

Softwood Grade A (1)
A Grade A (1) reclaimed sleeper will have bolt holes where the tracks were attached to it and a small amount of damage or slight wane is acceptable to one edge.
It will be very sound, free from rot and can be used for stacking, building retaining walls and many other uses where a clean straight

Reclaimed Softwood Grade A (1) Sleepers
edged appearance is essential.

Softwood Grade B (2)
A Grade B (2) reclaimed sleeper will have all the same characteristics of the Grade A (1) but may also have slight damage to one side and perhaps a small amount of rot to the underside where it lay on the ground under the railway tracks in its first life. It should have at least two good straight edges so can also be stacked and used to build retaining walls, aggregate bays etc.

Softwood Grade C (3)
A Grade C (3) reclaimed sleeper has all the characteristics of the above grades but can have more serious damage to most sides. A larger amount of rot to the underside is allowable. A Grade C (3) sleeper will always have one good face and so can be used to edge driveways, stand portable buildings or containers on or a plethora of other uses.

Hardwood Sleepers

Hardwood sleepers will be typically made from Oak, Beech or Tropical Hardwood such as Jarra, Karri or Azobe. Typically their dimensions will again be 2.6m x 250mm x 125mm with a weight of approximately 100 kgs. They will sometimes be creosote treated (see notes above).

Hardwood Grade A (1)
A Grade A (1) reclaimed sleeper will have bolt holes where the tracks were attached to it and a small amount of damage or slight wane is acceptable to one edge. Oak sleepers may have small splits at either end. Tropical hardwood sleepers may have minimal loosening of the grain and or minor splits

It will be very sound, free from rot and can be used for stacking, building retaining walls and many other uses where a clean straight edged appearance is essential. It may also be used in areas which may come into contact with a water source such as river bank retention or fishing platforms.

Hardwood Grade B (2)
A Grade B (2) reclaimed sleeper will have all the same characteristics of the Grade A (1). Oak sleepers may also have slight damage or waning to two sides, larger splits at the ends and or be bent.
Tropical hardwood sleepers may have significant loosening of the grain and or split ends. This is completely normal with tropical hardwood, but the sleeper will be essentially sound although very rustic looking.

Hardwood Grade C (3)
A Grade C (3) reclaimed sleeper has all the characteristics of the above grades. Oak sleepers can be very misshapen. Tropical hardwood sleepers can have severely damaged edges and some rot.

NEW SLEEPERS

There are a large variety of sizes and types of new sleepers available in both soft and hard woods for use in landscaping projects.

Softwood Sleepers

Softwood Sleepers will generally be made from Baltic or Scottish Pine and will usually be ACQ (alkaline copper quaternary) treated. This is an environmentally friendly form of pressure treatment which will provide a long term protection from rot and decay.
Typically this treatment has either a green or light brown colour.

Standard sizes are:
  • 2.4m x 115mm x 225mm (weight approximately 65kg)
  • 2.4m x 125mm x 250mm (weight approximately 75kg)
  • 2.4m x 100mm x 200mm (weight approximately 50kg)
  • 1.2m x 100mm x 200mm (weight approximately 25kg)
Other sizes and types are available, including new untreated Tropical Hardwood. Please contact us with your requirements.

Hardwood Sleepers

                   New Hardwood (Oak) Sleepers

Hardwood Sleepers will generally be made from European Oak and will usually be untreated.

Standard sizes are:
  • 2.6m x 120mm x 200mm (weight approximately 85kg)
  • 2.6m x 130mm x 220mm (weight approximately 100kg)
  • 2m x 100mm x 200mm (weight approximately 80kg)
Other sizes and types are available, including new untreated Tropical Hardwood. Please contact us with your requirements.

FIXINGS FOR SLEEPERS

TimberLok landscaping screws have become the first choice for joining sleepers together.

They deliver a solid fixing with no preparation or pre-drilling required before use. They have an anti-friction coating to ensure they will penetrate even the hardest wood. However, when using with hardwood, a heavy-duty mains powered drill will be required.
Each pack comes with a hex drive socket.

They are available in three pack sizes (10, 50 & 250) and lengths ranging from 100mm to 300mm in 50mm increments.

TREE ANCHORING SYSTEMS

The Duckbill system is a simple, reliable and cost- effective tree anchoring solution.

The concept involves a specially designed anchor, linked to high yield wire rope, being driven into the ground where it is locked in position. The load is then applied via a ratchet.

Two options are available, overhead guying and rootball fixing.

Overhead Guying

Kits are available for a wide variety of tree sizes. For example, a kit for a tree with a trunk of 220mm 450mm would be made up of:
  • 3 x Model 88 Anchors on 6mm x 1.8m long wires each with a Ratchet Tensioner.
  • 3 x 4mm wire Guys 5m long.
  • 3 x Tree Collars 9 washers.
  • Full Installation Instructions.
Rootball Fixing

Again, different kits are available depending on tree size. As an example, a kit for a tree with a trunk of 220mm 450mm would be made up of:
  • 3 x Model 88 Anchors
  • 6.5m of 4mm tensioning cable
  • 1 Ratchet Tensioner.
  • Full Installation Instructions.
Small anchors (Model 88) are driven in by hand with a drive rod. Larger anchors require a pneumatic hammer.
